The Attentive Mind Workbook:

Self-Healing Through Meditation
Author: Alan P. McAllister, Ph.D.

A step-by-step guide to developing a meditation practice directed at self-healing, personal growth, and the creation of positive emotions

Meditation is a means of cultivating attention that has been rediscovered by modern psychological science as a tool for self-discovery and self-healing. Its techniques and insights are increasingly employed in therapy for individuals with many forms of mental suffering, from stress to serious mental disorders. This workbook is designed as a self-help guide based on one of the most thoroughly studied meditation traditions, variously known as insight meditation, mindfulness meditation, and vipassana.

Reviews:

Practical, wise, and good humored, this book provides gentle guidance through territory the
author knows well. The style of the book itself is calming–without the unnecessary claims or
artificial drama so commonly found in self-help volumes. Filled with new insights, you will learn
a lot and have fun along the way. Highly recommended.

This book is clearly written and delightful to read. I appreciated how clearly the author drew out the therapeutic applications of mindfulness meditation while still acknowledging the Buddhist roots of the teaching. The author, Alan McAllister, skillfully avoids falling into the trap of apologizing for or obscuring those roots and aims, while highlighting the pragmatic skills that can help anyone to live a calmer, freer life. It is a lovely work, and I am so glad to see it shared in the world.
